Small Business Administration and Its Significance

The word business often refers to any organization or entrepreneur engaged in professional, commercial, or agricultural activities for the benefit of others. Businesses may be for-profit corporations or non-profitable organizations that conduct charity activities or further a public social good. The activities of business, therefore, allow for the development of society and the world as a whole.

The profits of businesses, therefore, allow the society and the world at large to function properly and for the economic advantage of all individuals. Many types of businesses exist in the world today. Some businesses are designed to provide goods and services directly to consumers on an individual basis; others are designed to generate revenue by selling products and services to individuals through a retail establishment or via the Internet. Yet, some businesses conduct both functions on a national, regional, and global level.

A major portion of the world’s population is made up of small businesses. These businesses are typically family owned and operated and are known as sole proprietors, partnerships, or corporations. One distinguishing characteristic of a small business is that it usually has few financial assets or resources. Because many small businesses do not have the assets to operate successfully, the majority must seek outside funding to fund their operations.

When a business earns profits, the portion of these profits that are attributable to the workers or owners of the business is called the income of the corporation. Business owners or workers have their own personal share of the corporation’s income, referred to as their personal profits. Business that are incorporated also have their personal profits passed through a double taxation agreement to the government. These taxes are levied on the corporate structure both individually and through the double taxation agreement of the corporations.

The main reason behind incorporation is to establish a legal entity for conducting business activities, which can provide the public some protection from the conduct of illegal business activities by the corporation. A business organization that incorporates will not be able to conduct any business activities without complying with various governmental policies. In addition, it provides the means for a corporation to change its business structure without needing to go through a lengthy legal process. Many business organizations are successful in their endeavors because of the support given by their policy makers.

There are various levels of taxation that a business can incur depending upon how it conducts its business. Corporate tax is the most significant source of revenue for most small businesses. It is calculated on the value of each unit of stock that is issued and based on the value of each share of stock issued. Business policies may also include indirect taxes such as property taxes and payroll levies. All of these taxes add up over time and create a substantial amount of profit for the owner or employee(s). This profit can be divided between the company and the owners or employees to distribute to the paychecks as they are due or use the funds to further the company’s objectives and mission.
